December in Edinburgh
Thinking about visiting Edinburgh in December? Great idea! The capital really comes alive at Christmas, making it a truly magical place to see. As you'll be more than aware, with the situation the world is in at the moment, many traditions have unfortunately been cancelled this year. Edinburgh is no exception, so a lot of these things I will be listing won't take place in 2020, however I still recommend giving it a read as it will provide you with some ideas for any future trips!
Edinburgh Christmas German Market
The German market is a staple of December in Edinburgh. It's always the hub of the city during this time of year, meaning it's always pretty busy so be aware of that. However it's popular for a reason; it's so beautiful; it's honestly an Instagrammer's dream! The stuff on sale is also great, ranging from home made house decor to some amazing food! It's a great way to spend an evening, looking around all the goods for sale. There's also some super fun things to do, including ice skating and a Christmas tree maze.
Edinburgh's Christmas Lights
Another great photo opportunity are the many Christmas displays that light up the city, especially at night! Edinburgh goes all out with its seasonal decorations, and it does it really well! George Street is one of my favourite locations to see the lights; they're mind blowing. you could easily spend a day just exploring the different displays around the city.
Speaking of George Street, The Dome is an architectural staple of this area. It's a fantastic place to eat, drink, and enjoy some afternoon tea. At Christmas, however, it really goes all out. It's Christmas tree in the centre of the grand entranceway is beautiful, but it's the external decorations that really amazes. Everyone always states that it's not Christmas time until The Dome has its decorations up; it's a true staple of December in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Zoo's Lights
We're really sticking to the theme of lights here! Edinburgh Zoo put on a fantastic light display each year, highlighting a different theme. Past shows have ranged from dinosaurs to mythical creatures. I highly recommend taking a trip to the zoo, and then spending the evening looking at these fantastic works of art.
To round off the month, I definitely recommend celebrating Hogmanay in Edinburgh (AKA New Year's Eve). Scotland really goes all out for the changing of the year, so spending this time in the capital is great fun! The shows and firework displays on the 31st of December are amazing, especially over the castle, and there's always plenty of hot food and drinks to keep yourself going! It's also televised, so there's always the chance you'll see yourself on TV too! If large crowds aren't really your style, however, then I recommend looking into booking a room with a view of the castle; you're guaranteed a fantastic private fireworks show!
And so those are my top tips for things to see and do in December in Edinburgh. I'd love to know what you're favourite seasonal things to do in your home town are! Let me know on social media:
