My Visit to Greyfriar's Kirkyard
Only a few days ago I spent my Saturday morning wandering peacefully around Greyfriar's Kirkyard, a graveyard right in the city centre of Edinburgh. This kirkyard is famous for three main reasons:
It's where the story of Greyfriar's Bobby comes from; a dog who was so loyal to his owner that he stayed by his grave after he died.
It's considered to be one of the most haunted places in one of the most haunted cities in the world.
It's said to be where JK Rowling got a lot of her inspiration for Harry Potter character names.
The third reason is why I took a trip to the graveyard last weekend; I wanted to see how many HP-related names I could find! The location itself is absolutely beautiful. It's an oasis in the middle of the city; there's so many trees and green spaces. You also get wonderful views of some of the beautiful spires, as well as the castle itself. Even if you're not interested in the graveyard itself, it's worth coming here just to see the views!
On my travels I found quite a few gravestones with Harry Potter character names, including Tom Riddle, the Potters, McGonagall, and Moody. All in all, I was in the graveyard for about an hour, just wandering around looking for names. In the end I needed to consult quite a few websites to help me find them; they're not as easy to locate as you might think! It was incredibly relaxing spending time walking around this beautiful place. I got there about 9am and I was basically the only one there, so I definitely recommend getting there early.
Overall, I had a fantastic time exploring Greyfriar's Kirkyard; I cannot recommend a trip here enough for a relaxing start to your day! I actually filmed my experience and made a YouTube video, which you can find here. I'd love to know if there's a tourist attraction where you're from that's a bit unique and different!
